A new year in high school means new beginnings, new responsibilities and new challenges. And whether your students are excited or dreading the year ahead, one thing is certain: they are at an important crossroads, and the path they choose will have far-reaching consequences for the rest of their lives.
This is a big accomplishment for many 9th graders and one that very few of them will be ready to do. Fortunately, you can help your students begin to embrace the importance of high school by encouraging them to reflect and write about their experiences in a daily journal.

Journaling is always one of the best ways for young people to change their experiences, learn to think critically and start making better decisions.
The first year of high school is one of the most important moments in a young person’s life. As students face new responsibilities and enjoy new freedoms and opportunities, they begin to renegotiate and discover who they are.
When you combine this transition period with all the hormones and the experience of starting a new school, it’s easy to see why freshman year can be a very stressful time for young students. Fortunately, there is one classroom activity that can help students feel more grounded and confident in themselves and their actions—and that activity is writing.
As students write, they become more self-aware. They also become more confident in their thoughts and feelings, which helps them feel more comfortable speaking and participating in class. As your students grapple with difficult issues such as moral issues, online citizenship, and the challenges facing girls and boys today, they will develop new perspectives, critical arguments, and develop self-confidence.

Creative writing naturally feels like it should be easy—after all, the word “creative” implies a sense of freedom and possibility that other, more restrictive forms of writing lack.
However, sometimes the lack of boundaries makes it very difficult to start writing. Children are sometimes confused by tasks that do not have many rules and struggle to begin writing effectively.
Encourage children to do other things besides writing. While it may seem counterintuitive that the first writing tip suggests doing something other than writing, other experiences encourage creativity once students return to their desks. Children who struggle with writing can find motivation by enjoying their hobbies and trying new things.
Perfection is the worst enemy of creative writers everywhere. When a person writes things that are important to him, it is natural to care about the quality of that thing.

Advanced students who worry too much about correcting a sentence can easily become frustrated and associate the inconsistencies they hear with the writing as a whole. Instead, encourage your children to freewrite first and get as many ideas as possible. They can come back later and correct errors during maintenance.
While you may be tempted to assign students a specific writing assignment, sometimes it’s better to sit back and let them write what interests them most.
Encourage your 9th graders to take a common topic and spin it in any direction that interests them. Most children have a lot to say and are more comfortable writing when they can discuss familiar and interesting topics.
Brainstorming is fun writing—and focusing on the information can help even struggling students get started. Give 9th grade writers a time or situation and ask them to describe the human experience through the eyes of the five eyes. What does the shape look like? What kind of sound does one hear – a cry or the sound of leaves? Is there a smell in the air? Can this person taste something – sweet lipstick or delicious apple pie? What does this behavior entail?

Small, realistic work goals also help children who struggle with writing. Encourage children to write for 10 minutes each day or write a paragraph or two. With an end goal in mind, even students who dislike writing will know what to expect and will find it easier to complete the assignment. As students become more comfortable with writing, you can gradually increase the length of the assignments and at the same time see their skills improve.
